Background
World literature, Indonesian literature, and local literature are not three isolated entities. There has been a long history of contacts between those three. It showed that on 23 February 1852 Raja Ali Haji wrote Syair Abdul Muluk which was later published on Tijdschriftvoor Nederlandsch Indie. Meanwhile, in 1872, Kartawinata, son of a chief of a village in Garut Residence, published a book entitled Carita Tuwan Kapitan Marion. The work, written in Sundanese and used Javanese letters, was a version of De Geschiendenis van den Kapitein Marion.
Furthermore, the three entities interact within a complex dialectics. Myriads of local literary treasure was taken by force during the collonial expedition throughout the Indonesian archipelago. Nonetheless many local writers went through silent paths to introduce world literature. In the meantime, Indonesian literature which is forbidden to publish by local regime was successfully published abroad.
